17 Reasons Why Getting a Dog Is an Incredible Idea

An honest and funny (I like to think) guide to why life with a dog is simply better

So, you’re thinking of getting a pet, right? Well, stop right here if your mind is filled with future “memories” of wagging tails and happy barkings. Here, we’ll talk about all the reasons why getting a dog will be the best decision you’ll ever make (besides, of course, getting a pet in the first place).

1. Unconditional Love

I couldn’t start with anything else. Dogs are born to love. And they don’t judge either! You may wear the same clothes day after day (please don’t), and they’ll wag their tail at you exactly the same. They might sniff you a little more, though -take it as a quick quality check.🤪

2. Loyalty

If you open your heart to a dog, it will be there for you forever. It will never “ghost you”, never leave you intentionally, and it will remind you daily that you’re its entire world.

3. They Miss You… A Lot

It doesn’t matter if you’re gone for five minutes to take out the trash or for a long shift at work…they’ll notice.

Actually, when you return, it will feel like you just came back from a 10-year trip to the moon. So, yes, be ready for a huge welcoming party every time. It will be pure joy, zero drama, too (well…mostly).

4. Feeling Alone? Not on Their Watch.

You’ll never be alone again! Like, never. You’ll have company even in the bathroom. Don’t worry, your “business” will be guarded!

Dogs don’t really understand “personal space”. It’s adorable.

Oh, and forget eating alone. You’ll have those moments – many of them- when you’re trying to eat and feel eyes burning into your soul. Yep, that’s your dog right there, ready to “share” a nice dinner with you.

Just… don’t expect them to do the dishes.

5. A dog is a Built-in Security System (with optional barking upgrade)

Some breeds are natural guardians. But, even with the small ones, you feel safer. If they love you, they’ll give anything to guard you.

And, you’ll tell me now that the size matters…Well, of course, a chihuahua wouldn’t do much if you had an intruder in your home (although Ι must say I have seen some “vicious” ones), but it would sure warn you quicker than an alarm siren.

There will surely be some false alarms too…but you get the point. Some intuderts may be scared away as well.

6. Many Doses of Serotonin

Feeling stressed? Sad? Having an existential crisis at 3 AM? Your dog’s got you. One tail wag or goofy face and  boom - instant serotonin.
They’re like living antidepressants with fur and occasional drool.

7. They Make You Evolve as a Person

Dogs teach you many lessons. First of all: Responsibility. You’ll become more responsible -feeding, walking, schedules, etc. You’ll also learn patience, because training them takes some time. Let’s say, you’ll master the fine art of pretending you don’t see the chewed-up shoe. And finally, animals make you more sensitive.

8. Dogs Remind You to Live in The Moment

For them, every walk, belly rub, and treat is the best thing ever. They teach you to see the little things that you usually ignore. Like the smell of freshly rained-on grass, the joy of a long walk, or the excitement of the mailman arriving.

You open a new pack of treats? Best day ever.
You sit on the couch? Oh wow, incredible, let me join.
You say “walk”? This is it. Peak life experience.

9. They’re a Great Way to Meet New Friends or Even… a Partner

Seriously, walking a dog is like carrying a “Talk to Me” sign. Strangers smile at you, neighbors suddenly remember your name (or your dog’s name), and before you know it, your dog has a bigger social circle than you could ever imagine.

Not to mention that they can work as a cupid angel too. Just imagine someone you like with his/her dog. Your best friend will do all the hard work for you.

Who knew that letting your dog sniff another dog’s butt could lead to benefits for you?

10. By Getting a Dog, You Get…a Personal Trainer, Too

Did I mention that you’d have a free personal trainer more dedicated to your fitness program than your actual personal trainer?

In fact, if you have a dog, you have company for every crazy long trip, walk, or run you can think of. If you’re this type of person, just make sure to choose the right dog for you. You don’t want to end up with a 15-kilo dog on your shoulders.

11. Dogs are Good for Kids

Growing up with a dog can reduce allergies and strengthen immunity.
Their “outside vibes” introduce harmless microbes that train our immune system.

This study shows that exposure to dogs in the first year of life may decrease the risk of asthma in six-year-old kids.

Also, this study indicates that exposure to dogs during pregnancy or early childhood lowers the risk of food allergies.

Dogs can also teach kids to be more responsible, loving, and caring. They learn to understand animals better, and they grow up loving them.

12. Having a Dog Makes You…Friendlier

Studies have shown that people pictured with a dog appear happier, safer, and more relaxed. They also seem to be more approachable and friendly.

13. Get a Dog to Reduce Stress

Playing with a dog has been found to decrease stress hormone cortisol and raise oxytocin -the “love hormone”, making people calmer, happier, and less stressed. This study shows how spending time with dogs can reduce stress and anxiety and help you be more concentrated, emotionally stable, and creative.

14. They Make You More Organized

You may forget your own birthday, but with a dog? Impossible. They thrive on routine, and you’ll adapt. Walks, meals, training…all on time.
Suddenly, you’re a responsible adult with structure.

It’s like magic. Furry, adorable magic.

15. Improved Sleep

Many people sleep better knowing their furry friend is nearby  - it increases feelings of safety and reduces nighttime stress.

(Unless your dog snores like a tiny tractor…then results may vary.)

16. More Time Outdoors

Walking, playing, and training outside means more sunlight -so, higher Vitamin D levels, better mood, and more energy.

17. Getting a dog will improve your Heart health

Lastly, keeping you fit and providing social support, dogs may reduce cardiovascular risk.

Findings from a Swedish population-based study indicate that single-person households with dogs exhibit significantly lower rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality.

So, if you live alone, this pet doesn’t just keep you company-  it may also help you live longer and keep your heart healthier.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, life with a dog will be messier and furrier, a little louder for sure, but also a lot happier, healthier, and full of puppy love.

Aren’t those the goals in life?
