For me, there’s a certain magic in the countryside that the big city just can’t match. I’m not just talking about the endless green fields and the beautiful animals, but also about things like being able to see the stars or enjoy your morning coffee, without your neighbor screaming because someone stole their parking space.
And yes, cities have perks like more job opportunities, better nightlife, and more choices, but those just aren’t for me.
So, if you’re thinking of making this life-changing move, as I did, let me show you some reasons why it’s actually a great idea.
1. Peace And Quiet
I couldn’t start with anything else. I think I’m in love with the idea of starting my mornings with birds chirping instead of cars honking incessantly.
Sure, you may have to wake up to a rooster informing you that it’s a great day to be a morning person…but honestly, waking up to natural sounds is so much nicer.
2. Cost of Living
Nowadays, living in the city feels like paying just to breathe. Renting a small apartment feels like taking out a loan. You get your paycheck, it instantly flies away, and you’re left wondering how much rice a human body can actually withstand.
In the countryside, the idea of buying a house becomes doable, and you can finally save for that espresso machine you’ve always wanted.
You don’t have to sell a kidney just to…exist, and you have so many cozy and affordable ways to spend your time. Take your pick: swimming in the river, picnicking with the best views, dancing at local festivals, stargazing…and the list goes on.
Plus, by buying from local shops or farmers, you support your community, and often receive a few extra goodies in your bag, simply out of kindness.
3. Fresh Air
Can we just talk about how much fresher the air feels in nature? You can actually breathe without inhaling the accumulated pollution of every car that passed through your neighborhood in the last few days.
Trees aren’t just beautiful- they work for us too. They clean the atmosphere, and with more of them around and fewer vehicles, you can truly feel the difference.
4. Natural Beauty
This is a subject that always makes me a little sad: how much natural beauty has been destroyed to make room for big, imposing buildings.
In the city, the closest thing to nature is the potted plant on your balcony, desperately trying to stay alive…assuming you are lucky enough…to have a balcony.
Fortunately, in the countryside, breathtaking beauty is everywhere: mountains, rivers, forests, and fields.
And the stars…god, the stars. They’re brighter, sharper, and actually visible in the countryside, far away from the city lights.
5. Neighbors Are Usually Friendlier
In the big city, you’re lucky if you even know who lives below you. You can smile and say “good morning,” and they’ll barely notice.
The countryside, on the other hand, thrives on real human connection. People know each other, greet each other, and actually mean it.
Soon enough, you’ll find yourself helping a neighbor with an errand or discussing the weather for 20 minutes as if it’s the most fascinating topic in the world.
You’ll make good neighbors who will surely remember your name.
There’s a different sense of belonging in a smaller community that’s hard to find in the city.
6. Traffic (or…the Lack of It)
There was a time when I couldn’t wait to move to the city. I was going to be a university student, you see. Then I tried it…and immediately missed small village living.
At first, I went everywhere by bus, waiting forever at the stop. And the traffic? Insane! I needed a full hour to get to class because of it.
Then, one day, you finally get a car, buuut…now you spend 30 minutes looking for parking. And let’s not forget the arguments with people who believe the spot beside the only tree in the neighborhood belongs exclusively to them. Unwritten laws and all.
7. Slow Living
In the village, life feels like it slows down a little. You still have work or school, but you don’t rush your mornings because you’re not stuck in traffic all the time.
Suddenly, you don’t see people sprinting everywhere.
It’s a refreshing change from city life, where every second is monetized, scheduled, or optimized for efficiency.
Life isn’t rushed, stress decreases, and somehow…everything feels fuller.
8. Healthier Living
Fresh air, less pollution, less stress- we mentioned these already.
But there’s more: you can grow your own vegetables and fruits, which is obviously healthier than buying overpriced giant, shiny tomatoes that taste like plastic. You have the option to grow them organically and start eating healthier.
But, even if you don’t grow your own produce, countryside markets offer everything from local farmers. So, your food is fresher, tastier, and sold by people you actually know.
9. Tastier Food
Of course, healthy eating gets even better when the food actually tastes good.
Fresh organic vegetables, local eggs, honey from your neighbor’s beehive-everything tastes like it actually wants to be eaten. And yes, your body notices the difference.
Suddenly, that tomato doesn’t feel like tasteless plastic in the shape of a tomato…it’s perfect! You actually need bread to dip into your salad because there’s real juice!
Oh, and the taste…heavenly!
10. A Creativity Boost
If you’re a creative type of person, you’ll start to notice a difference.
When you stop running, stressing, and chasing your free time, you start noticing the little things: the smell of fresh rain, the sound of leaves rustling, the birds that accompany your morning coffee.
With fewer distractions, life itself inspires you.
11. Wildlife
And as you start noticing more, you also begin to notice life around you.
Let’s be honest- the idea of hiking and suddenly seeing a squirrel or even a deer is quite exciting.
In the city, the closest thing to wildlife is a pigeon claiming breadcrumbs like it’s treasure.
12. Countryside Feels Safer
Crime levels are usually lower in small communities. You also usually know your neighbors personally, which naturally makes you feel safer.
13. More Space
In the village, it’s easier to find a house with a yard, or a bigger living area for the same price you’d pay in the city for a small apartment.
So, you have more room for your hobbies, and your kids or pets have space to play.
14. Trips to The City
One of the best things about countryside living is that you can still visit the city whenever you want and…actually enjoy it.
You usually have more money saved and more stable time management, so you can go to concerts, fancy restaurants, or anything else you love.
Final Thoughts
All things considered, I feel that choosing the countryside is a great idea, and it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re escaping the city, or maybe…it does.
Honestly, I regained my sanity by slowing down a little.
I wake up happier, breathe easier, spend more time outdoors, and connect more deeply with people and nature.
Life in a smaller place is quieter, more peaceful, and makes you appreciate things so much more.
Of course, job opportunities can be fewer, and not everyone prefers this kind of living. And that’s okay.
But if someone has the chance and the desire to make the move, it truly is life-changing.
For me, it’s one of the best choices I’ve ever made.
